How it connects
The plug pushes straight into the keyed slots; spring contacts grip its blades and ground pin. No twist-lock or threaded coupling is used. Weather protection depends on the enclosure and cover, not the basic mating interface.
Male and female halves
This is the female 14-50R receptacle with recessed contacts. Its mating male is the 14-50P plug with three flat blades and a grounding pin.
Usually connects to
- NEMA 14-50P plug on a 50 A RV cord, portable EVSE or electric-range cord

How to recognise it
Look for a 14-50R and 50A 125/250V marking. With the rounded/U-shaped ground opening at the top, there are two vertical hot slots at left and right and a straight vertical neutral slot below the center. The face may be rotated in use.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| NEMA 14-30R | The 30 A configuration has an L-shaped neutral slot; the 14-50R has a straight neutral slot. |
| NEMA 6-50R | 6-50R has three contacts and no neutral; 14-50R has four contacts including separate neutral and ground. |
| NEMA 14-50P | P is the male plug with projecting blades; R has receiving slots. |
| NEMA 10-50R | 10-50 is 3-wire with no round/U ground hole (neutral is L-shaped/angled). |
| NEMA SS2-50R / CS6365 | Those are locking twist-type with a curved slot; 14-50 is straight blade. |

Good to know
A pedestal rated 100 A can contain a 14-50R interface; the pedestal rating does not make that interface 100 A. Mounting hardware and rear wire terminals are separate connections.
