How it connects
The contoured curved flange of the saddle fits against the outer wall of a round flue pipe over a cut opening, secured using metal straps or sheet-metal screws. The cylindrical collar receives the barometric damper gate sleeve.
Male and female halves
Neutral saddle mount; the curved profile mates flush against the round exterior of a flue pipe, while the circular sleeve receives or sleeves over the draft control gate housing.
Usually connects to
- round flue pipe
- smoke pipe
- chimney vent connector
- barometric draft regulator
Common sizes
- Typically 4" to 9" diameter collar for draft gates, contoured to fit 5" through 10" diameter flue pipes (commonly 6" collar for 5"-7" pipes).
Where it is used
HVAC ventingoil and coal heating systemsresidential and commercial chimneysboiler breeching
Variations
- curved saddle with strap clamps
- crimped flue tee collar
- screw-fastened saddle tap
How to recognise it
Recognised by a curved sheet-metal profile shaped to seat against round cylindrical smoke pipe, featuring a circular takeoff sleeve (often slotted or sized to hold a barometric damper ring) and mounting straps or screw perforations.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| duct saddle tap | Duct saddle taps are designed for air distribution HVAC ductwork rather than high-temperature flue gas exhaust or barometric draft control gates. |
| standard flue tee fitting | A standard flue tee is an inline cylindrical pipe section with a fixed branch, whereas a saddle collar wraps onto existing pipe over an auxiliary cutout. |
