Stove-Pipe Damper Pivot Pin

A smooth unthreaded cylindrical steel spindle tip or pivot pin extending from a manual stove pipe damper assembly. It inserts through pre-drilled or pierced holes in opposing walls of a single-wall stove flue pipe to pivotally support and operate the damper plate.

How it connects

Inserts through drilled holes in opposing walls of a sheet-metal stove pipe, held under tension by an external coil spring on the spindle handle to retain the assembly while allowing 360-degree rotation.

Male and female halves

Male pivot pin/spindle tip mating into a female plain circular clearance hole in the stove pipe wall.

Usually connects to

  • Correct clearance/pivot hole in the stove/flue pipe wall
  • Matching cast-iron damper plate

Common sizes

  • Pin diameter typically 3/16–1/4 in (about 4.5–6.35 mm); spindle length matches 3–10 in stove pipe, with many lines covering 3–8 in.

Variations

  • sharp/pointed self-piercing tip
  • blunt round tip
  • keyed or crimped offset spindle shaft
  • pointed tip reversible spindle
  • threaded nut retaining spindle
  • wire coil handle spindle

How to recognise it

Recognised as the unthreaded cylindrical steel pin extending beyond the damper disc, often with a tapered or pointed tip designed to poke through the far wall of a sheet-metal stove flue pipe.

Often confused with

Confused withHow to tell them apart
General Pivot PinStove pipe damper pins are integral elongated steel spindles with pointed/blunt ends engineered specifically for sheet-metal flue damper plates and spring retention.
Fastener Clearance Hole FemaleThe hole in the pipe is the female mating clearance hole, whereas this is the male protruding pin end of the damper spindle.
Standard pivot pin or dowel pinDamper spindles feature a coiled cool-touch wire handle, compression spring, and crimped bends or retainers to grip the damper plate.

Good to know

Commonly found on manual single-wall chimney dampers (such as Master Flow BACID or vintage Griswold designs), where a cast iron or stamped steel disc is threaded onto the spindle and retained across the flue walls.
