How it connects
The grooved male plug is pushed into a female coupler; the coupler's two cam arms are swung down, pressing cams into the plug's circumferential groove, pulling it against a gasket in the coupler, which forms the seal. Hose side is a barbed connection.
Male and female halves
This is the male (plug/adapter) half; the female half is the coupler with cam arms and gasket. Type E's other end is a hose shank, not a thread.
Usually connects to
- Matching nominal-size female cam-and-groove coupler: Type B (male-thread tail), C (hose shank) or D (female-thread tail)
- Same-size Type DC dust cap
Common sizes
- Nominal hose/pipe sizes commonly 1/2–6 in, with 8 in used in fuel/oil service; nominal size is not adapter OD.
- Pump/backwash hoses commonly use 1-1/2, 2 or 3 in, especially 2 in. Type E tables span 1/2–6 in, with interface dimensions standardized by nominal size.

Variations
- Type E male adapter × hose shank, including multi-barb/reduced/oversize shanks
- Type F male adapter × male thread/NPT
- Type A male adapter × female thread/NPT
- Type DP dust plug
- Aluminum, stainless, brass, polypropylene or nylon
How to recognise it
A cylindrical plug with a single wide circumferential groove near its tip and no arms, often with a hex or flat band, followed by a ribbed/barbed hose tail. Frequently stamped 'E' plus size.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Camlock Type F | Type F has a male pipe thread on the back end instead of a ribbed hose shank. |
| Camlock Type C (female coupler x hose shank) | Type C is the female coupler with cam arms x hose shank; Type E has a plain grooved plug with no arms. Type C has cam arms and a socket; Type E is a bare grooved spigot with no arms. |
| Storz or Bauer couplings | Storz uses symmetric lugs rotated to lock; Bauer uses a ball-and-socket with lever ring. Camlock male is a simple cylinder with one deep groove. Storz is genderless with hook lugs and twist-lock; camlock uses cam arms on a groove. |
| Grooved (Victaulic) pipe end | Victaulic grooves are clamped by a separate bolted housing; camlock adapter has a short machined nose and is clamped by a coupler's levers. |

Good to know
The male cam-and-groove face and hose-barb tail are separate interfaces. US MIL-C-27487/A-A-59326 and European EN 14420-7 dimensions are largely, but not always fully, interchangeable.
