Coaxial Cable Compression Termination

The rear internal cable entry interface of a coaxial connector designed to mechanically terminate and moisture-seal stripped RG-6 coaxial cable via axial compression of an internal mandrel/sleeve.

How it connects

Prepared cable is inserted over an inner tubular post (mandrel) between dielectric and braid/jacket. An axial compression tool slides an outer collar forward, compressing the jacket into a 360-degree radial, watertight seal.

Male and female halves

Female cable socket/entry port that accepts and permanently captures a prepared male bare RG-6 coaxial cable end.

Usually connects to

  • Prepared RG11 plenum coaxial cable compatible with the connector’s conductor, dielectric and jacket dimensions
  • prepared (stripped) RG-6, RG-6 quad shield, RG-59 or RG-11 coaxial cable

Common sizes

  • Cable-specific fits: RG-59 about 6.1 mm OD; RG-6 about 6.86–7.1 mm (0.270 in); RG-6 Quad Shield about 7.57 mm (0.298 in); RG-11 about 10 mm.
  • Universal RG-6 versions accept dual and quad shield.
  • RG11 plenum 92-212 example: 18–14 AWG solid conductor, 0.270–0.280 in dielectric and 0.340–0.356 in jacket. These are cable-fit ranges, not universal bore sizes.

Variations

  • Cable-specific RG-6 dual-shield or universal dual/quad-shield entry
  • RG-59 and RG-11 F compression entries
  • RG11 plenum-specific entry, distinct from ordinary RG11
  • Weatherproof O-ring version
  • BNC or RCA compression version
  • Other cable sizes require matching compression bodies

How to recognise it

Circular rear port of an uninstalled coax fitting featuring an internal tubular brass mandrel and an outer plastic or metal compression sleeve/ring awaiting axial compression.

Often confused with

Confused withHow to tell them apart
Hex crimp RG-6 cable entryHex crimp uses an external metal ferrule deformed into a hexagonal shape with crimp pliers, whereas compression uses an axial sliding sleeve producing a uniform round 360-degree seal.
Twist-on / screw-on RG-6 cable entryTwist-on fittings thread directly over the outer jacket by hand without tools or sliding sleeves.
F-type connector mating interfaceThe F-type mating interface is the 3/8-32 UNEF threaded front nut; the compression cable entry is the rear receptacle where raw coax cable terminates. A female F jack mates with an F male plug. This interface receives stripped cable inside a rear compression sleeve.
Plumbing compression fittingThis terminates concentric coax conductors using an axial compression tool; it does not use a pipe compression nut and olive.
Ordinary RG11 compression cable entryVerify all cable dimensions and the plenum-specific part number; an RG11 label alone does not establish fit.

Good to know

Describes the cable-side termination interface of a connector rather than the front mating interface (such as male F-type, BNC, or RCA).
