How it connects
The driver tip is inserted into the recess and torque is transmitted through the cross wings (Phillips) or slot walls (flat blade); no seal, purely a tool-drive interface.
Male and female halves
The recess in the screw head is the female half; the screwdriver bit/blade is the male. This port is the female recess.
Usually connects to
- Matching Phillips screwdriver/bit, such as PH1 or PH2
- Matching flat-blade screwdriver/bit
- Combination-head driver bit
Common sizes
- Combination drives occur on screw sizes #0–3/4 in or M1.6–M10, commonly #4–1/4 in (M3–M6).
- Match the Phillips recess, commonly #1/#2/#3, and the flat-blade width/thickness to the head.

How to recognise it
Looking at the head: a cross-shaped recess where one of the two arms continues as a straight slot all the way across the head to both edges.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Phillips recess | Plain Phillips has only the cross; combo has one arm extended into a slot reaching the head edge. |
| Slotted drive | Plain slot has no cross recess deepening at the center. |
| Pozidriv/slotted combination | Pozidriv has extra tick marks at 45 degrees between the cross arms. |
| Slotted Pozidriv (PlusMinus / terminal block combo) | Slotted Pozidriv has secondary radial ribs between the cross vanes and parallel recess sidewalls, whereas standard cross/slot combination has tapered cruciform wings. |
| Robertson/slot (square/slot combo) | Square/slot combination uses a central square pocket intersected by a slot rather than a 4-winged cross. |

Good to know
This recess accepts a screwdriver. A #8-32 screw typically uses a #2 Phillips bit, but confirm the actual drive size.
