How it connects
Insert a selected chain link through the open mouth and seat it in the narrow throat. The hook geometry holds the chain at that link under load; this is a mechanical engagement with no fluid seal.
Male and female halves
Hook and chain link are the usual mating terms, rather than male and female. “Female” here describes the receiving throat informally; it does not identify a standardized female socket.
Usually connects to
- Welded chain link matched to the hook manufacturer’s specified size and grade
Common sizes
- The sample is nominally for 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) chain stock. This is the chain material diameter, not the throat width. Other grab hooks are sized for other chain diameters; use the stated chain size and grade rather than estimated photo dimensions.

Variations
- Clevis grab hook: pin attachment at the opposite end
- Eye grab hook: closed eye attachment at the opposite end
- Non-cradle grab hook
- Chain-shortening grab hook
- Eye attachment or clevis attachment at the opposite end
How to recognise it
Look for an open hook with a narrow slot leading to a curved chain seat. Check stamped chain size and grade and the manufacturer’s chain compatibility data. A clevis pin or eye at the back identifies the hook’s other attachment, not the throat interface.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Slip hook | A slip hook has a wider, rounded throat allowing chain movement; a grab hook has a narrow throat intended to hold a selected link. |
| Clevis end of the same hook | The clevis is the fork and removable cross-pin at the opposite end. It is a separate attachment from the open chain-grabbing throat. |
| Hook eye or clevis | The eye is a closed attachment hole; the clevis has a cross-pin. Both are separate from the open chain-engaging throat. |

Good to know
A grab-hook throat is a mating feature rather than a universal connector designation. Wide-throat slip hooks and different hook grades do not establish interchangeability.
