Torx Six-Lobe Screw Drive

The size T25 Torx (hexalobular, six-lobe star) drive recess in a screw head. It is a female tool-engagement socket that takes a T25 driver bit, not a fitting.

How it connects

A male T25 six-lobe bit slides axially into the recess and transmits torque through the lobe flanks. There is no seal and no retention, apart from a slight friction fit.

Male and female halves

This is the female half: the internal recess in the fastener head. The male half is the T25 driver bit. Tamper-resistant 'TR' or security T25 recesses have a center pin and need a hollow bit.

Usually connects to

  • Matching T-size TORX/hexalobular screwdriver, power bit, bit socket or L-key, including T15 and T25 examples

Common sizes

  • TORX spans T1–T100; common sizes include T5, T6, T8, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45, T50, T55 and T60.
  • T25 tips are about 4.4 mm across points, common on #9/#10 wood/deck screws, M5 machine screws and #10 sheet-metal screws.
  • T15 recesses are about 2.6 mm (0.10 in) point-to-point, common on #6–#8 or M3.5–M4 deck/cabinet screws.

Variations

  • Standard ISO 10664 TORX
  • Security center-pin TORX, including TR15/T15H and TR25
  • TORX Plus IP15/IP25, with flatter/different lobes and limited interchangeability; one description calls IP25 five-lobe
  • External E-TORX bolt head
  • TORX ttap stability button

How to recognise it

A six-pointed star-shaped recess with rounded lobes in the screw head, roughly 4.4–4.5 mm across the points. It is often marked T25 on packaging.

Often confused with

Confused withHow to tell them apart
Torx Plus IP25Its lobes are squarer and flatter. A T25 bit fits but is loose.
Hex / Allen Socket (Internal Hex)A hex socket has six flat sides and sharp corners; Torx has six rounded lobes. Hex socket features 6 flat straight sides with sharp internal corners, whereas Torx features 6 rounded, lobed/star petals.
T27 / T20 TorxThese are neighbouring sizes. Check the label or test with a bit; T25 is about 4.4 mm across the points.
Torx Plus RecessTorx Plus lobes have flatter, more squared-off lobe profiles rather than pointed star radii; standard Torx bits fit loosely in Torx Plus recesses, while Torx Plus bits do not fit standard Torx recesses.
Security Torx (TR)Security Torx has a solid cylindrical post protruding from the center of the socket that prevents insertion of standard solid Torx bits.

Good to know

This is a tool-drive recess. A measured envelope about 4.5 mm across and 2.2 mm deep is consistent with T25; match the actual T-size.
