TORX ttap Screw Drive

A six-lobed internal screw drive recess featuring a central cylindrical/tapered pilot pocket (button recess) at the bottom, engineered for wobble-free stick-fit engagement with TORX ttap bits while maintaining backward compatibility with standard TORX bits.

How it connects

The mating driver bit inserts into the internal six-lobe recess. In dedicated ttap bits, an extended center pin/button seats tightly into the central recess pocket, providing stability and friction fit.

Male and female halves

Female drive recess formed in the screw head; mates with an external/male TORX ttap or standard TORX driver bit.

Usually connects to

  • Matching T-size TORX ttap bit with center nib for the best stick-fit
  • Same-size standard TORX/hexalobular bit, backward-compatible but without stick-fit

Common sizes

  • ttap follows TORX T-numbers, commonly T10–T40; wood/structural screws often use T20/T25/T30/T40, roughly 3.9–6.7 mm across lobes.
  • Examples differ in whether the size is specified; one uses T40. Confirm the actual fastener T-size.

Variations

  • TORX ttap flat head recess
  • TORX ttap washer head / hex head recess
  • TORX ttap in different T-sizes
  • T-sizes T10–T50 range
  • ttap on countersunk, pan and washer-head screws
  • TORX ttap with Frixion Fit

How to recognise it

Recognised by a standard 6-lobe star socket with a noticeable sunken circular pocket or well centered at the bottom of the socket.

Often confused with

Confused withHow to tell them apart
standard TORX (ISO 10664) recessStandard TORX recesses have a flat bottom across the lobes, whereas TORX ttap has a distinct deeper cylindrical/conical well in the center.
Torx Plus (IP) recessTorx Plus uses squared lobe lobes rather than round lobes and does not feature the central pilot alignment well.
Security Torx (pin-in Torx) female recessSecurity Torx has a solid pin protruding upward in the center of the socket, whereas TORX ttap has a hole/recess sunken into the bottom.
Standard TORX (hexalobular) recessA plain TORX recess has a flat or cone-shaped bottom with no extra pocket in the middle. A ttap recess has a smaller round pocket at the bottom of the lobes.
TORX Plus / tamper-resistant TORX (pin in center)On a tamper-resistant TORX recess a pin sticks up out of the middle. On ttap there is a hole in the middle, not a pin. TORX Plus has squarer lobes.

Good to know

Fully backward compatible: a standard Torx bit can drive a TORX ttap fastener, but only a TORX ttap driver bit engages the center stability button to prevent wobble and give stick-fit retention.
