How it connects
Ring slides over the tube; the tube is pushed over the fitting's barbed insert; the ring is radially crimped with a jaw tool (checked with a go/no-go gauge), compressing the tube onto the barbs. Seal is PEX-to-barb; permanent.
Male and female halves
The barbed insert is the male half and the tube end is the female socket; the ring is a female collar around the tube. The ring does not mate directly with a fitting, it clamps the tube onto a male PEX barb.
Usually connects to
- Matching CTS PEX tube exterior (ASTM F876/F877) over the insert
- Matching ASTM F1807 metal/brass barbed insert
- Matching ASTM F2159 plastic/poly/PPSU barbed insert
Common sizes
- CTS PEX sizes include 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 in; each ring fits its own tube size.
- Tube ODs: 1/2 in = 0.625 in (15.9 mm), 3/4 in = 0.875 in, 1 in = 1.125 in (28.6 mm).

Variations
- Full copper crimp ring, including black-coated/annealed F1807 versions
- Stainless crimp sleeve
- Sleeve with sight hole or positioning collar
- PEX-A/PEX-B tubing as approved
- F2098 stainless ear/cinch clamp (different tool/method)
How to recognise it
Short plain copper (sometimes black-coated) band, slightly larger than the PEX tube OD, sitting 1/8-1/4 in from the tube end over a brass or poly barbed fitting; crimped rings show a uniform squeeze.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Stainless steel cinch (clamp) ring, ASTM F2098 | Cinch ring is stainless with a raised ear tab pinched by the tool; crimp ring is a plain smooth copper band compressed all round. |
| PEX-A expansion ring (ASTM F1960) | Expansion rings are thick PEX plastic sleeves; the tube is expanded over a fitting rather than crimped. Expansion rings are thick PEX plastic, not metal, and the tube is expanded rather than crimped. |
| Compression ferrule/olive | Ferrules are used with a threaded nut; crimp rings have no nut. |
| PEX cinch/clamp ring (ASTM F2098) | Cinch ring has a raised ear/tab pinched by a one-hand tool; crimp ring is a plain smooth band crushed all around. |
| ASTM F1807 copper crimp ring | Copper crimp rings are made of black or bare copper and are narrower bands, whereas stainless sleeves are full-length metallic sleeves often featuring a sight hole. |

Good to know
Name describes the crimp ring part of the PEX barb crimp joint, not a standalone port type. Ports on crimp rings are best mapped to PEX tube OD (bore) and the joint to 'PEX barb crimp (ASTM F1807)'. Images were mostly fittings/listings, consistent with this.
