How it connects
The circular roller wheel is inserted into and captured within the curved lip of the steel track channel, riding freely along the inner surface without a mechanical fastening or seal.
Male and female halves
Genderless rolling assembly / male roller inserted into female guide track channel.
Usually connects to
- Matching 2 or 3 in roll-formed sectional-door C-channel track, vertical or horizontal
- Matching roller wheel in the assembly
Common sizes
- Nominal 2 in tracks use wheels about 1.75–1.88 in (44.5–48 mm) OD, common in residential doors.
- Nominal 3 in tracks use wheels about 2.75–2.88 in (70–73 mm), common in heavy commercial/industrial doors.

Variations
- 2 in residential or 3 in commercial track
- Steel wheel
- Ball-bearing nylon wheel
- Plastic/nylon bushing wheel
- Horizontal-track section
How to recognise it
Recognised by a disc-shaped roller wheel (steel or nylon, typically ~1-7/8 inch diameter) rolling inside a roll-formed steel channel with an inward-curving retaining lip mounted vertically and horizontally along the door frame.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Sliding barn door box track and hanger | Barn door box tracks are enclosed overhead box channels carrying hanging trollies rather than open C-profile side tracks guiding door panel roller stems. Barn doors typically use box tracks or top-hung enclosed trolley tracks rather than open sectional door vertical and curved C-tracks with edge rollers. |
| Garage door roller stem to hinge sleeve | The stem to hinge connection is a cylindrical rod sliding into a hinge barrel/tube, whereas tread to track is the wheel rolling inside the outer steel track rail. |
| sliding barn door box track and trolley | Barn door box tracks are enclosed square/rectangular channels with top-hung dual/quad wheeled trolleys, whereas garage door tracks are open C-channels guiding edge-mounted single stem rollers. Barn door box tracks are enclosed square/rectangular channels with open bottoms where trolleys hang downward, whereas garage door tracks are open C-channels oriented vertically and horizontally. |
| Garage door roller stem in hinge tube | The stem connection is a cylindrical sliding/swiveling insertion fit in a hinge barrel or bracket, whereas this interface is the outer wheel rolling inside the C-channel track. |

Good to know
Garage door rollers are sized slightly under the nominal track channel width (e.g. 1-7/8 inch roller for a 2-inch track, 2-7/8 inch roller for a 3-inch track) to allow smooth rolling clearance.
