How it connects

The female plastic or vinyl cap pushes over the exposed male wire tip and is retained by friction and interference fit.

Male and female halves

Male (the cylindrical solid wire tip on the shelf), which inserts into a female flexible cap.

Usually connects to

  • Matching push-on plastic, vinyl or rubber protective cap/sleeve for shelf deck wires, main rails or shelf-and-rod ends

Common sizes

  • Small deck-wire caps fit roughly 1/8–3/16 in (3–4 mm), including 0.14–0.16 in (3.5–4 mm); 12-gauge wires can be about 2.7 mm.
  • Main rails use about 4-gauge/0.225–0.23 in (5.7–6 mm), nominal 1/4 in (6.35 mm), or up to 5/16 in (8 mm); 8-gauge supports also exist.

Variations

  • Cut or factory-coated wire tip
  • Small deck/cross-wire cap
  • Large front/back rail or hanger-rod cap
  • Gauge-specific caps, including described 4-gauge small and 0-gauge large versions

How to recognise it

A smooth or shear-cut round steel wire rod extending from the front, rear, or side edge of a wire shelf, onto which a soft plastic cap is pushed.

Often confused with

Confused withHow to tell them apart
Shelf and Rod double end cap bracketDouble end caps bridge between two parallel wires/rods, whereas individual shelf wire end caps cover a single wire tip.
Electrical wire pin / ferruleElectrical ferrules and pin terminals conduct current and crimp onto copper stranding, whereas shelf wire ends are structural coated steel rods meant purely for protective plastic caps.
closet pole end capCloset pole caps fit large hollow tubular hanging rods (typically 3/4 in. or 1 in. diameter), whereas shelf wire end caps fit solid cut wire rods under 3/8 in. diameter.
wire shelving wall bracket sleeveWall clips or brackets screw directly into the wall to support the shelf rather than simply capping exposed wire ends.
shelf joining spigotShelf joining spigots/pins structurally link two shelf sections together; wire shelf end caps are blind protective caps covering exposed wire ends to prevent snagging or scratching.
