How it connects
Webbing is manually fed through the central mandrel slot and tensioned. Operating the ratchet handle rotates the spool, wrapping multiple layers of webbing around the mandrel to bind and friction-lock the strap securely.
Male and female halves
Female receptacle (slotted mandrel/spool) that accepts a male flexible flat webbing strap end.
Usually connects to
- Matching-width flat polyester/nylon cargo tie-down webbing end
Common sizes
- Webbing widths commonly 1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 in (about 25, 38, 50, 75 and 100 mm).
- Slot clearance/thickness typically about 2–5 mm, depending on the spool.
Where it is used
Cargo/freight securement and material handlingCommercial trucking/flatbed logisticsRecreational/automotive towing and trailering
Variations
- Split twin-pin mandrel
- Standard manual ratchet spool
- Auto-retractable spring-loaded ratchet spool
- Standard single slot cylindrical mandrel
- split-axle mandrel slot
- solid center-cut mandrel slot
- double-slotted mandrel
How to recognise it
A central rotating steel cylinder across the ratchet buckle frame featuring a full-width lengthwise slot through which flat webbing is threaded.
Often confused with
| Confused with | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Cam buckle jaw | Cam buckles use a spring-loaded ribbed alligator clamp jaw rather than a rotating slotted spool to hold webbing. |
| Flatbed winch slot | Winch mandrels are larger trailer-mounted cylinders operated via separate winch bars rather than integrated ratcheting hand levers. |
| Cam buckle strap slot | Cam buckles clamp the webbing with a spring-loaded ribbed or toothed cam rather than wrapping webbing around a rotating slotted mandrel. |
| Winch strap slot | Flatbed winches use a larger dedicated mandrel mounted to the trailer frame rather than a portable hand-operated ratchet mechanism. |
| Cam buckle webbing slot | Cam buckles clamp webbing using a spring-loaded serrated cam tooth lever rather than winding it around a rotating toothed spool/mandrel. |

Good to know
Requires at least 2 to 4 full wraps around the spool under tension to achieve rated holding strength without strap slippage.
