How it connects

The cylindrical stud inserts vertically into a mating socket or bearing cup in the bottom door bracket, bearing the axial vertical load of the door while permitting low-friction rotational movement.

Male and female halves

Male cylindrical stud mating with a female pivot socket or bearing recess.

Usually connects to

  • Matching storefront-door bottom/offset pivot-arm socket or shoe
  • Matching oilite bronze bushing or needle/ball-bearing receiver

Common sizes

  • Common pivot pins span 5/16–3/4 in (about 8–19 mm), with many storefront examples 3/8–1/2 in.
  • A common offset is 3/4 in, with up to 1/8 in vertical adjustment; offset is separate from pin diameter.

Variations

  • threaded height-adjustable pivot stud with hex nut
  • fixed threshold-mount pivot stud
  • flanged pivot spindle with roller/ball bearing
  • 3/4 inch offset pivot stud
  • center hung pivot stud
  • flush door pivot stud
  • 1/8 inch recessed pivot stud

How to recognise it

A solid, unthreaded cylindrical stud projecting upward from a jamb or threshold bracket (frequently mounted on a threaded shank with a hex nut for door vertical clearance adjustments).

Often confused with

Confused withHow to tell them apart
Top pivot retractable pinTop pivot pins are spring-loaded or retractable via a screw mechanism to install/remove the door, whereas bottom pivot studs are rigid load-bearing posts (often height-adjustable with a jam nut).
Butt hinge pinButt hinge pins pass through interlocking knuckles on a surface leaf, whereas a storefront pivot stud is an isolated vertical pin mounted to a frame/floor bracket supporting an offset door arm.
Floor closer spindleConcealed floor closer spindles usually have splined, cam-shaped, or rectangular driving profiles to transfer spring and hydraulic torque, whereas a pivot stud is a passive smooth round pin.

Good to know

Often forms the lower load-bearing component of 3/4-inch offset or center-hung commercial door pivot sets (common brands include Kawneer, US Aluminum, Vistawall, and YKK).
